10-Goal Polo Players
The 10-goal polo handicap is the maximum rating in the sport — awarded to players widely recognised as the absolute elite of world polo. This is the exclusive group of players who have achieved it.
Editorial Note
This page presents players widely recognised as having achieved 10-goal status — not a definitive official list. Polo handicaps are dynamic and vary by national association and jurisdiction. For the current authoritative 10-goal list in any country, consult the relevant national association (AAP, USPA, HPA, etc.).

Understanding the 10-Goal Rating
The Polo Handicap System
Every polo player is rated on a handicap from -2 (beginner) to 10 (maximum). The handicap is a measure of a player's overall contribution to a team — skill, horsemanship, tactics, and quality of ponies are all considered. It is not a scoring handicap but a rating of general playing ability.
How Handicaps Are Awarded
Handicaps are awarded and reviewed by national polo associations (HPA, USPA, AAP, and others affiliated with the FIP). Players are assessed based on their performance in competitive polo. Reaching 10 goals requires sustained excellence over time at the highest levels of competition.
The 10-Goal Standard
A 10-goal rating indicates that a player is among the absolute elite of world polo. It reflects not just exceptional skill but an extraordinary overall contribution — horsemanship, tactical intelligence, and the ability to elevate a team's performance under the most demanding competitive conditions.
Rarity of 10-Goal Status
At any given time, the number of active 10-goal players worldwide is extremely small — typically fewer than a dozen players globally hold the maximum rating simultaneously. Achieving 10 goals is widely regarded as the highest honour a player can receive in polo, equivalent to the pinnacle of professional achievement in the sport.
Players Widely Recognised as Having Achieved 10-Goal Status
These are among the most widely recognised players associated with 10-goal status across the modern and historical eras of polo. This is not a complete or official list — it reflects well-documented, widely acknowledged achievements.
Adolfo Cambiaso
Widely regarded as the greatest polo player in history, Adolfo Cambiaso is synonymous with 10-goal polo. A dominant figure in Argentine high-goal polo for decades, he has been a defining presence at the Argentine Open and at high-goal tournaments worldwide. His combination of horsemanship, ball skill, and tactical vision is widely considered unmatched.
The Heguy Family
The Heguy dynasty produced multiple generations of 10-goal polo players, including Alberto, Horacio, Eduardo, and Gonzalo Heguy. As a family they represent one of the most remarkable concentrations of polo talent in history, with several members simultaneously holding the maximum handicap rating.
Pablo Mac Donough
A long-standing 10-goal player, Pablo Mac Donough is one of the most respected figures in modern polo. He has competed at the highest levels of Argentine and international polo for many years, and is widely recognised as among the select group to have sustained a 10-goal rating across an extended career.
Facundo Pieres
Facundo Pieres has been widely recognised as having achieved 10-goal status during his career. He has competed at the Argentine Open and at high-goal tournaments across the world, and is regarded as one of the dominant players of his generation.
Tomas Pieres
Like his brother Facundo, Tomas Pieres has been widely recognised as having reached 10-goal status. Both brothers have been formidable forces in Argentine and international polo across the modern era.
Memo Gracida
Carlos "Memo" Gracida is one of the greatest polo players of his era, having achieved 10-goal status in both Mexico and the United States — a rare distinction. He was a dominant force in American polo and is widely regarded as one of the finest players of the 20th century.
Carlos Gracida
Carlos Gracida, brother of Memo, also achieved 10-goal status and was among the most respected players of his generation in American high-goal polo.
Juan Martin Nero
Juan Martin Nero is a long-standing elite Argentine player who has been widely recognised as having achieved 10-goal status. He has competed at the highest levels of Argentine and international polo.
Argentina's Dominance
Argentina has produced the vast majority of 10-goal polo players in history. These are the widely understood reasons for that dominance.
Consistent dominance
Argentina has produced the vast majority of 10-goal polo players in the sport's history, reflecting the country's exceptional polo culture, breeding of polo ponies, and the depth of competition at the Argentine Open and other top-level Argentine tournaments.
The polo pampas
Argentina's pampas region provides ideal conditions for breeding, training, and playing with polo ponies. The Argentine polo lifestyle — with professional players often having access to large strings of horses — creates the conditions for developing elite-level play from a young age.
Argentine Open as the proving ground
The Argentine Open, played at the 40-goal handicap level, is the primary arena in which 10-goal status is validated and contested. The competition at Palermo is the benchmark against which the world's best players are measured.
International spread
While Argentina dominates, 10-goal players have emerged from a small number of other countries — most notably Mexico and the United States. The HPA, USPA, and other national associations each maintain their own handicap lists, and a player may hold different ratings across different jurisdictions.
Current 10-Goal Players
The active 10-goal player list is maintained by national associations and the FIP. Because handicaps are reviewed and updated regularly — and can be adjusted up or down based on current form and competition results — the composition of the 10-goal cohort changes over time. For the current authoritative list of 10-goal players in any given jurisdiction, consult the official published handicap lists of the relevant national association (HPA, USPA, AAP, etc.).
