The C.V. Whitney Cup
First awarded 1979The tournament was originally established in 1979 under the name "U.S. Handicap" and debuted at the Retama Polo Center in San Antonio, Texas. In 1988, the tournament was renamed in honor of Cornelius Vanderbilt "Sonny" Whitney, a pivotal figure in the development of polo in the United States, a three-time winner of the U.S. Open Polo Championship, and a member of the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame. The competition was created to serve as the premier high-level preparatory tournament before the USPA Gold Cup and the U.S. Open Polo Championship.

Whitney Cup is the second leg of the prestigious USPA Polo Gauntlet series at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida, serving as the critical bridge tournament between the Joe Barry Memorial Cup and the US Open Polo Championship. Named after Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, one of American polo's greatest patrons and players of the twentieth century, the tournament carries historic prestige in the US polo calendar. Played at the 26-goal level, the Whitney Cup narrows the field of championship contenders and often produces the most competitive matches of the Florida season.
