    Polo Handicap System in India

Indian Polo Association handicap system guide — scale, assessment criteria, and official resources.

    Overview of the IPA System

The Indian Polo Association (IPA) manages handicaps in one of polo's historic homelands. India has a unique polo heritage, with the sport's origins in Manipur, and the IPA maintains this tradition while aligning with modern international standards. Indian polo combines military tradition, royal patronage, and contemporary sport.

    Handicap Scale Details

India uses the standard -2 to 10 goal scale aligned with international FIP standards.

The IPA system follows international standards while maintaining India's distinctive polo traditions. Many Indian players develop through military polo programs (Army Polo, President's Estate) and civilian clubs, with handicaps reflecting performance across both sectors.

    Assessment Process

The IPA Handicap Committee evaluates players based on tournament performance across India's polo season. Assessment considers both civilian and military polo competitions. Regional polo associations provide input to the national committee.

The committee includes representatives from major polo-playing states (Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai areas) and the military. Annual reviews occur at the end of the main polo season.
